Nissan Is Developing A New Hybrid System With A 2.5 Liter Supercharged Engine FWD Cars



Not to be outdone its rivals in Europe and Japan, Nissan has developed a new hybrid system for vehicles with front wheel drive, the first details of which were released today with the announcement of its next-generation Xtronic CVT (CVT) for use with 2.0 liters to 3.5 liters.

Nissan has come a little late to the hybrid game and was forced to leave for rival Toyota's hybrid technology for use in some markets in 2004.

"It was a bit of a blow to our pride, but it was right in the circumstances," says Mitsunobu Fukuda, a senior engineer in Powertrain NATC (Nissan Advanced Technology Center).

"Instead of running a hybrid" copy-cat "wanted to take time to develop our own hybrid, which is distinctly different - and better. I think we managed to do that."

Nissan's new hybrid system consists of a supercharged 2.5-liter petrol engine mated to a CVT compact package, which includes a single motor and two clutches as well as lithium ion.

The carmaker said, noting no body or internal battery is sacrificed and the packaging is very compact.

Nissan has not released details, but said the Hybrid FWD match "the performance of a full-throated 3.5-liter engine, but with vastly improved fuel economy" while keeping the price tag down.

The system will make its world debut in 2013 models in North America and Japan. The next generation Altima is believed to be the leading candidate for a new hybrid system.

Along with the new hybrid system, Nissan has unveiled the next generation XTRONIC CVT, which promises to improve fuel economy by reducing friction and increasing the range of ratios.

According to the Japanese automaker, the corresponding models with the new CVT will receive up to 10 percent better mileage than previous versions, and nearly eight percent better than the current six-speed ATS.

The new generation Xtronic CVT will debut in North America in 2012.
