GM Considers Producing the Cruze and Other Chevy Models in Europe

Reclaiming the number one spot as the world’s best-selling car manufacturer in 2011 must have been quite satisfying for GM management. Still, there is a blemish in GM’s ornament as the company's CEO Dan Akerson admits: its loss-making European operations.

Even though Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed an interest in a possible tie-up with Opel, GM vice chairman Steve Girsky quickly responded that the German carmaker and its British division, Vauxhall, “are not for sale”.

But while Opel is not up for grabs, Akerson says that the company must do better and should “reevaluate its operations”. That’s why GM is shifting some of its Cruze compact sedan production to its European plants, in order to return the loss-making (US$13 billion since 1999) operation into profitability, according to a report from Autonews.

In November, Akerson stated that “Clearly, you can’t have a unit as important as Opel is to General Motors Co. chronically unprofitable.” He reiterated his opinion last week at the Detroit Motor Show, when he told reporters that the situation at Opel "is not tenable. We can't lose money in perpetuity".

Sources from IG Metall, the biggest workers’ union in Germany, told Reuters that GM is negotiating the transfer of the production of certain Chevrolet models from South Korea to Opel’s plants. What its management wants in exchange is the union’s consent in cost cutting.

The same sources claim that one option would be manufacturing the Cruze at Opel's plant in Poland and moving production of the Astra, which is currently assembled there, to one of its Western European factories.

Another option on the table is assembling the Orlando minivan in the Bochum plant in Germany, which already builds the Zafira MPV. IG Metall has proposed that the same plant, which the company’s management had indicated was the one most likely to be closed, to be used for production of the Chevrolet Captiva and Opel Antara SUVs.

Former Opel union boss Klaus Franz said last year that they also wanted the next-generation Agila mini to be built in Poland instead of Suzuki’s plant in Hungary where the current model is assembled, or South Korea, and the recently unveiled Mokka small crossover to be built in Spain.

Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke wants the carmaker to make a €1 billion (US$1.27 billion) profit by 2016, increase its European share to 8.5 percent and minimize costs. "We must focus our entire strength into lowering structural costs next year. We must abolish unnecessary processes and get rid of every form of bureaucracy," Stracke said in a recent company newsletter.

2013 Dodge Dart Photos Leaked Ahead of Detroit Motor Show Debut

There has been much excitement over the brand-new 2013 Dodge Dart as it's the first Chrysler product to be based upon a Fiat architecture – in fact so much that some couldn't just wait and unleashed a slew of pictures as well as the first video of the compact sedan on the road.

The Dart effectively replaces the Caliber in Dodge's lineup offering the Chrysler Group a direct rival to the Ford Focus and Chevrolet saloons.

It is based on a wider and longer version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta's platform and will offer American buyers an initial choice of three gasoline four-cylinder engines including a pair of natural aspirated units with a displacement of 2.0-liters and 2.4-liters rated at 160 and 184-horses respectively as well as a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine from the Abarth 500 with 160-ponies.

The front-wheel drive Dart will debut with a Fiat Group-sourced 6-speed dual-clutch transmission and a six-speed manual gearbox but in 2013, it will gain a new 9-speed transmission that is currently being developed by the ZF Group.

We'll have all the details from the Detroit Motor Show but for now, enjoy the first official pictures and video after the break.

2013 Ford Fusion to get Two Turbocharged Gasoline Engines Plus Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Variants

In roughly two days from now, Ford will lift the covers off the next generation Fusion at the Detroit Motor Show.

While the Blue Oval has not released much information yet on the Fusion, which will be marketed as a 2013 model in North America, we were able to confirm the initial engine lineup.

The 2013 Fusion will arrive in U.S. dealerships later this year with a choice of four powerplants. The gasoline range includes a pair of EcoBoost four-cylinder gasoline units with a displacement of 1.6-liters and 2.0-liters.

There are two hybrid variants, both sporting a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder that is shared with the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrid.

Even the regular 2013 Fusion Hybrid promises to return a much better fuel economy than the outgoing 2012 Fusion Hybrid with the 2.5L engine (41mpg city/36mpg highway), while the Energi variant will try to top the segment.

The 2013 Fusion will be offered with both front and all-wheel drive and a choice of automatic and manual transmissions.

What makes the new Fusion very important for Ford is that, like the latest Focus and Fiesta, it has been developed as global model and will be marketed outside North America as the new Mondeo.

Volkswagen to Debut Beetle-Based Electric Hot Rod at the Detroit Motor Show

We just learned that Volkswagen's surprise debut at next week's 2012 North American International Motor Show in Detroit will be a pure-electric concept model based on the new generation of the Beetle – despite previous reports saying otherwise.

The conceptual EV version of the recently launched 2012 Beetle will sport a heavily modified body with a lowered roof and wider fenders with its looks slightly resembling the Volkswagen Ragster Concept (pictured above) that was displayed at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show.

Power of course will come from an electric motor fed by a battery pack.

We'll post an update as soon as we find out more. In the meantime, feel free to check out the pictures of the 2005 VW Ragster concept after the break.
