10 Year-Old Boy Takes $206k Maserati for a Joyride then Crashes

The idea of swiping the keys of your father's car is something we probably all thought about at some point in our adolescent years. But how many of us really went ahead with the plan? Okay, you can put your hands down now…

One 10-year-old American boy in Hong Kong actually realized the idea and took his father's Maserati Gran Coupe, which was purportedly bought in 2009 for HK$1.6 million (US$206,000), for a crazy joyride near central Hong Kong.

The boy-trouble got the keys to the Italian sports car from an unlocked drawer and managed to drive off from the parking lot hitting another car in the process and continuing for another 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) on a busy road before he came to a stop and a by-passer called the police.

"Police arrested the 10-year-old for driving without a license and taking a conveyance without authority under the theft ordinance," said a police spokesperson, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

South China Morning Post reported that the child was released on police bail. While his offences can potentially carry a punishment of seven years in Hong Kong, the daily newspaper said that the boy would probably not be charged because of his age, but is still required to report to the police station at the end of the month.

Then again, now that he is home, we assume that's probably the least of his worries…

Holden's Version of the Volt to Cost Over $60,000 in Australia

Bad news for Australian drivers interested in GM's Chevrolet Volt as the local version of the car that will be marketed under the Holden brand and which is expected to arrive later this year will reportedly cost well over AU$60,000 (equal to US$62,000).

While Holden has yet to publicly announce prices, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that GM's subsidiary told its dealers that the Volt will carry a retail price of AU$59,990 before on-road and dealer costs, which the newspaper says rises to as much as AU$66,000 (US$68,200) with the aforementioned fees.

The similarly sized Holden Cruze, upon which the extended range electric car is based platform-wise, starts from AU$21,990 (US$22,700).

In the U.S., the Chevrolet Volt starts from US$39,645 (AU$38,400) before the US$7,500 federal tax credit which can bring the price down to US$31,145 (AU$30,150).

In other parts of the world, the Chevrolet Volt will carry base price of RMB 498,000 or about US$76,400 in China and €41,950 or US$60,800 in Europe.

In addition, Holden told its dealers that it would only bring 100 cars this year and no more than 500 in 2013. "If demand is 300, we will only bring in 300,'' one dealer told the news daily adding that, ''If demand is higher than 500, we will bring in no more than 500.''

New Photos of the 2012 Kia Cee'd Hatchback

We got our first peek at the next generation of the European market Kia Cee'd earlier this week when Kia released a single picture of the five-door hatchback, but today, the Korean automaker dropped a few more photos revealing the car's profile and rear end.

Kia's upcoming entry in the VW Golf segment features a more mature and upmarket styling with the large lights on either end of the car taking center stage. The Cee'd also gets Kia's new signature grille encompassed in a chrome surround.

We'll have to wait a bit for the interior shots, but according to the South Korean automaker, the new Cee'd will get a "driver oriented dashboard and refined interior, with a strong focus on quality of materials".

The five-door hatchback will make its first public outing at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March before it goes on sale across Europe in the beginning of the summer.

The Cee'd will be followed up by a replacement to the three-door Pro_Cee'd and later on, the Cee'd Station Wagon.

Chevrolet Debuts Sail Hatchback and MPV Concept at New Delhi Auto Expo

The 11th Auto Expo that takes place these days at New Delhi was the ground for the display of the Chevrolet Sail and MPV Concept, GM’s first products from its joint venture with China's SAIC.

The Sail is a five door sub-compact hatchback that has been developed at GM’s Technical Center in Bangalore to ensure that it will meet the needs of the Indian buyers.

On the outside, it sports the brand's family signature grille with the golden Chevy badge and vertical taillights at the rear. The cabin gets Chevrolet’s “double cockpit” design, along with chrome-plated accents, and an audio system with radio, CD-player and Aux-in connectivity (remember, the Sail is designed for emerging markets).

GM claims that the Sail can accommodate up to five people thanks to the placing of the fuel tank in the middle of the car and the short overhangs, which maximize interior space. It will be offered with both gasoline and diesel engines from GM India’s latest “Startech” line-up, though no further information was provided.

“The Chevrolet Sail hatchback will be a strong addition to GM’s mini-car portfolio in India”, said GM President and Managing Director Lowell Paddock. “It will bring a new sense of vitality to the biggest, fastest-growing and most competitive segment in the domestic passenger car market.”

The second tailor-made product for India, as well as other emerging markets, to be shown by GM and SAIC is a B-segment MPV study, which Lotus spent a year and a half cooperating with GM people to tune the chassis.

Chevrolet says that the roomy MPV Concept will be available in seven- or eight-seat configurations, both of which will feature the firm's so-called flexi-seating system.

“The Chevrolet MPV Concept is designed for those who want a spacious, comfortable and well-styled vehicle to enjoy life with their loved ones”, said Paddock.

DC Design Avanti is India’s First Sports Car, will Enter Production in 2013

The Italian automotive industry is renowned not only for supercar-making companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini, but also for its carrozzerias like Pininfarina and Bertone, which design and engineer cars for other automakers as well as manufacture their own limited production models.

The Indian automotive industry, on the other hand, is best known as the country that manufactures the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano, which may or may not lose the title to the Bajaj RE60.

While Italy is safe for now (…), India will soon have its own sport car thanks to DC Design’s Avanti that was launched at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo.

Founded by former GM designer Dilip Chhabria, DC Design is mostly known for its one-off prototypes. The Avanti, however, is a production ready sports car that will be manufactured at the company’s brand new plant at Talagon near its existing Prune facilities.

“Every country which has written its name in the pantheon of automobile manufacturing has invariably distinguished itself with sports cars by its own nationals and I thought that India rightly needs to be in this exclusive club”, said Chhabria. “The design is completely our very own as is the engineering and also the production process. Type approval and on-road tests would follow soon”.

Chhabria added that DC Design plans to manufacture 300 units of the Avanti in 2013-2014 and, if all goes well, increase annual production to four figures.

As its creator admits, India’s first supercar “doesn’t reinvent the wheel” as far as its conception and manufacturing process is concerned.

Like all small-volume manufacturers, DC Design will use parts from various carmakers, especially in the powertrain and suspension depaetments.

The prototype that was unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo is constructed around a lightweight but rigid spaceframe chassis. It features unequal-length wishbones and coil over shock absorbers on both axles, 19-inch wheels with 255/35 front and 295/30 rear tires and 330 mm ventilated disc brakes with AP Racing calipers.

It is powered by a mid-mounted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine sourced from Ford and tuned to deliver 240HP and 366Nm (270 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to its compliance with Euro 5 emissions regulations it can also be exported, while a slight change in the engine mapping will make it compatible with the oncoming Euro 6 regulation.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a Ford-sourced six-speed manual gearbox, while the Avanti will also be optionally available with a dual-clutch PowerShift transmission.

Although 240HP combined with a dry kerb weight of 1,562 kg (3,443 pounds) isn’t exactly supercar territory, the Avanti will be priced at a reasonable Rs 30 lakh, or around US$56,000 at the current exchange rates.

Later on, it may also be offered with a turbocharged Honda V6, which with an output of around 400HP should seriously improve performance (and, presumably, increase the price accordingly).
