Jay Leno and Other Volt Owners Drive 10,000 Miles without Using a Drop of Gas

Volt sales were collected recently expanded range of EV GM sells more than one of its main rivals, the Nissan Leaf, for the first time in October. Famous car nut Jay Leno, however, is one of the first and had his own Volt in December 2010.

The host of "The Tonight Show," said covered over 10,000 miles, never visit a gas station. Yes, you read that right: Leno still driving the same fuel tank was 11 months Volt.

"I think I need it, when the electricity and gas, when should I use," said Leno. "I travel a study of 28 km per day, then I go shopping, run errands, to pull up the driveway, which is 40 miles or so. Then plug it in, but if I travel by car is ready for that too."

Leno is not the sole owner Volt, which has passed the 10,000-mile without visiting the gas station. "I'm an opportunistic feeder," says Edward Ellyatt whose daily commute is 41 miles. "I usually find a 120V outlet in the garage and ask management if I can use when buying or eating. If I'm at a point in an hour or two, I m ' expect to have EV enough for me to go home where I can put in. "

Leno, Ellyatt Volt and other owners who have a five-digit number on the odometer of your car will receive a "10,000 miles Electric" badge.

Vice President of Global Marketing for Chevrolet, Chris Perry, said: "The flagship 10,000 miles Electric not only recognizes your achievements, but it gives another point to show off to anyone interested in learning more about the Volt."

A study by Chevrolet found that the average homeowner Volt fills the tank once a month and travels 900 miles between service calls.

Perry added: "The owners are a group of Volt very passionate and enthusiastic, they are pictures of their car, refer to themselves by their VIN number and freely talk about their ownership experience with all who ask.."

Subaru’s new 2.0-liter boxer: It’s better, but does it matter?

Subaru recently invited us to Budapest to get to know the 2011 European-spec Forester, which was… well, exactly what you’d expect (it was fine), but that’s not the point here. What is important is the all-new “FB” engine under the hood – Subaru’s third-generation boxer design – the same unit that we’ll be seeing in the upcoming Impreza. Essentially, it’s a sized-down version of our Forester’s 2.5-liter mill, as opposed to the second-gen EJ25 engine in the current Impreza. Got it? Good. Let’s get our hands dirty…

Finally Official: Pontiac is dead

Pontiac has been dead for some time now, at least from a manufacturing point of view. The Vibe was the last vehicle to roll of a Pontiac assembly line, marking the end of new car production for the brand in August of 2009. However, the former automaker has been stuttering and mumbling to itself while lying in its death bed. After all, new cars still needed homes and buyers eventually ponied up dough for the keys to the ghostly souls of a marque that once built the king of muscle cars: the GTO. Now, though, the very last new Pontiacs have been sold and the brand is completely, officially, no-doubt-about-it dead.

In an act of lunacy mercy, retired police officer Ed Dieffenbach drove over 1,100 miles to trade in his Chevrolet Silverado on one of the last Pontiac Solstice Coupes left in the country. Driving from Miami to northern Florida, Mr. Dieffenbach helped put an end to the brand’s suffering while also putting a somewhat stylish two-door in his driveway. We’re sure he’ll have years of fun with the Solstice, as long as he doesn’t need to use the cup holder… or stow the roof… or look back.

2012 Fiat 500 Abarth

Covering the automotive business is rife with surprises. Case in point: On a recent trip to the stunning Algarve region of Portugal to test Continental Tire’s new ContiEcoContact 5 (verdict: they’re very good), we had the chance to sample a bit of forbidden fruit.

In the process of learning about the German company’s doughnut-making capabilities (which included a journeyman’s seminar on velocity-excited short- and long-chain polymers, the CEC5′s three-percent fuel economy bump and improved wet-braking capabilities), one test car fitted with Continental’s new rubber was a EU-spec 2011 Fiat 500 Abarth.

Knowing that the factory-fettled 500 is headed our way in two year’s time, we snagged the keys to see if Italy’s hottest hatch was ready to bring the pain to the John Cooper Works-infused offerings from Mini.
