Polk Study Says Median Age of U.S. Vehicles Reaches an All-Time High

According to a study published by global automotive market intelligence firm Polk, cars and trucks in the United States are aging - and at a pretty fast rate.

The average age of cars and light trucks currently in operation the U.S. has increased to 10.8 years. Cars have recorded a relatively small surge in age, from an average of 11 years in 2010 to 11.1 years in 2011, while the median age of light trucks, pickups and SUVs rose from 10.1 to 10.4 years.

The report says that the slowdown of the economy in 2008 and 2009, and the uncertainty it has since created among consumers, has resulted in low volume sales these two years.

Despite the fact that more trucks were sold during that period than passenger cars, their average age increased faster – a trend which Polk analysts estimate will change due to the increasingly high sales of smaller SUVs.

On the other hand, last year marked the end of the declining vehicle numbers that begun in 2008. The study shows that, compared to July 2010, the number of vehicles that were operational in July 2011 had increased by 500,000 units, to 240.5 million.

As always, there are two sides on each coin. Polk global aftermarket practice leader Mark Seng explains: “The increasing age of the vehicle fleet, together with the increasing length of ownership, offers significant business growth opportunity for the automotive aftermarket. Dealer service departments and independent repair facilities, as well as aftermarket parts suppliers, will see increased business opportunity in need of vehicle service.”

Techart Porsche 911 Turbo goes from 0 to 100km/h in 2.8 Seconds

There's fast and then there's Techart fast. The German aftermarket company that has made a name for itself in the crowded world of Porsche tuners has presented a new and more potent performance package for the current 911 Turbo [997 series].

The TA 097/T3 conversion kit for the 997 Turbo involves the installation of a sport air filter, new manifolds, the TECHART Turbo chargers VTG, high performance intercoolers as well as the an ECU upgrade and engine styling package in carbon-fibre.

In factory trim, the 911 Turbo's force-fed 3.8-liter flat-six lays down 500HP and 650Nm of peak torque, and this package will bump that up to 700-horses and 880Nm (649 lb-ft).

As a result, the Techart-prepped Porsche completes the classic sprint from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in a mere 2.8 seconds and breaks the 200km/h (124mph) barrier in 9.0 seconds. Top speed is rated at 352km/h (219mph).

Cobra Tries to Roughen Up the Nissan Juke Crossover

It has taken a while for tuners to warm up to the Nissan Juke, but we're slowly starting to see some new aftermarket products for the Japanese firm's odd-looking small crossover. One of the fist tuners to get their hands on the Juke is Germany's Cobra Technology, which created a styling set designed to give the Japanese crossover a more rugged-ish look.

As with other crossover and SUV models, Cobra Technology's first line of order is to fit a stainless-steel front grille guard that is said to meet European pedestrian safety standards. Optionally, buyers can add a pair of LED daytime running lights.

The kit also includes tubular side steps with integrated plastic steps, a sports exhaust system with twin tail pipes and the choice of 19- or 20-inch multispoke alloy wheels.
