Slavche Tanevski Creates a Mercedes-Benz Electric Taxi For 2025

Outside of London's ubiquitous TX4, the purpose-built taxi is almost dead. Checker is long gone and Ford Crown Victorias now grace New York's congested streets. It's more to do with economics than anything else: why build something new and unique when you can modify an existing vehicle?

In a similar vein to Volkswagen's Milano Taxi, independent designer Slavche Tanevski has produced this design study for the Mercedes-Benz Nimbus, a city cab for the year 2025. Tenvski claims that he created the Nimbus as a tribute to the world's first motorised taxi, the 1897 Daimler Victoria. You can see a few of the Victoria's styling cues reflected in the flowing, almost liquid-like curves of the former.

Brought to life during Tanevski's internship at Mercedes' Exterior Design Studio, the Nimbus features an electric motor mounted at each wheel hub powered by lithium ion batteries beneath the floor. This compact arrangement helps it comfortably accommodate three adults and their luggage or up to five adults without luggage.

All and all, I think it's a solid effort. Don't take my word for it though, have a look at the gallery and let us know what you think in the comments below.

MR Car Design gives the VW Golf R a Power Boost

Made for those that find the GTI underpowered, the Golf R with its 270HP 2.0-liter turbo-four is the most potent and fastest-accelerating Golf ever to be produced by VW. Still, that's not enough for certain buyers that wouldn't mind a few extra ponies. And here's were tuners like MR Car Design come into the picture.

Enter the tuning firm's new "MR6R" power kit, which adds a reprogrammed ECU, custom downpipe, intercooler and a sports exhaust system to boost the TSI's output from 270HP and 350Nm to 330HP and 470Nm. The German company did not release acceleration numbers, but we'll assume that with this kit, the Golf R will improve the stock model's 5.7 second time for the 100km/h mark.

Also available from MR Car Design are new 19-inch wheels wrapped in 235/35-19 rubber and a set of H&R sports springs.

VW Teases Jetta R with 3.6L V6-Powered, All-Wheel-Drive Prototype

Volkswagen's new 2011 Jetta has just landed on European shores, but Germans already have new plans for it. During the European press launch, the media got a taste of the Jetta R with a special prototype fitted with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, six-speed DSG transmission and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

As you can see in the pictures, the V6 prototype's body has not been altered yet. Only the bigger wheels and four-tail pipes at the back signal that there's something going on here.

Should it make into production, you can rest assured that the R division will dress-up the Jetta with a body kit, probably featuring more aggressive spoilers, lowered side sills and other R goodies, plus interior appointments. We reckon racing seats, sportier steering wheels and pedals are safe bets.

The Jetta R should fit snugly in the R line-up, alongside the Golf and Scirocco sports models and the also rumored Polo R. Its future depends on customer feedback: if enough people want it, Volkswagen will make it. Simple as that.

"If there are customers asking for it, we will do it. It wouldn't be a problem for us. The Jetta's platform can take four-wheel drive" VW R&D chief, Ulrich Hackenberg, told Autocar magazine, which managed to snap a shot of the prototype Jetta's V6 powerplant (see here).

It should be noted that the European Jetta has received many upgrades over its American counterpart. These include the use of higher quality and softer materials on the control panel and a more sophisticated four-link suspension system at the back instead of the U.S.-spec model's simple, beam axle setup.

Then again, the base Jetta in Germany, which is powered by a 105HP 1.2-liter TSI petrol, starts at €20,900 (about US$29,435 at today's exchange rates), whereas the entry-level U.S. model with a 115HP 2.0-liter petrol, starts just $15,995 (around €11,400). Guess you get what you pay for...

Transformers Film Ford Mustang Decepticon for Sale on eBay

Is US$130,000 a little too much to be paying for a Vin Diesel-driven Dodge Charger R/T? Do you think the home of the American muscle car is Dearborn? Is your DVD collection populated with Bad Boys and Pearl Harbour instead of xXx and Stealth?

Carscoop hears you, and so does MotoeXotica of St. Louis. On eBay right now is the second of three quasi-Police issue Saleen Mustangs built for the first Transformers film in 2007.

The Mustang, which played the Decepticon Barricade in the movie, has all the Saleen goodies including a "3V modified" engine, 5sp manual tranny, 20 inch alloys as well as exterior, suspension and exhaust upgrades.

Saleen then handed the car over to the movie's FX department who added the police pushbar, decals and a host of flashing police lights. The only downside is the absence of a supercharger, which was removed so it would not interfere with the microphones placed inside the car during filming.

The car has been well looked after with 7,200 original miles (11,587 km) on the clock, and is undamaged and 100% street legal. The bidding is currently stalled at US$35,100, which is less than the (undisclosed) reserve price.

Meet the 90X, Peugeot’s Next Le Mans Contender

Say bonjour to Peugeot Sport's next generation racing car, currently codenamed 90X. Set to compete in the 2011 racing season, the 90X will replace the four-year-old 908 HDi, which took first place in the 24h of Le Mans in 2008.

Peugeot had entered four 908 prototypes at this year's edition of the Le Mans, but while the racers took the top four spots in the qualifying round, all four cars had problems and were retired before the end of the race. This was the first time that none of the Peugeot 908s finished the 24-hour classic. So now, the French carmaker is preparing its successor that has just completed its first track test.

"Our objective was to start track testing before the end of the year," says Peugeot Sport Director Olivier Quesnel. "I am pleased to report that we have now done that. Even so, there is still a long way to go and a considerable amount of work to be done as we prepare for 2011."

The new car meets ACO's 2011 regulations and is also a closed cockpit model, meeting the mandatory 900 kg (1,984 lbs) weight limit. A new safety feature has been incorporated in the design, a "shark fin" placed on the engine cover, meant to prevent the car from becoming airborne in the case of a high-speed spin.

"We are still exploring several options with regard to the engine and technology we will use," Bruno Famin, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport, pointed out. "Work on the engine's development is ongoing. Endurance racing is an ideal proving ground to provide us with the opportunity to showcase all the brand's technologies" he added.

Chrysler Group Reports Smaller Losses in Q3 2010

A loss is a loss, but at least there's an improvement in the Chrysler Group's financial results for the third quarter of the year that ended on September 30, 2010. The American automaker, which is operated by Fiat SpA, reported an $84 million net loss in Q3, the smallest in the year and less than half the $172 million loss in the second quarter of 2010.

In other results, Chrysler said Net Revenues increased to $11,018 billion representing a 5.2 percent improvement over the prior quarter, while year-to-date Net Revenues, as of September 30, 2010, totaled $31,183 billion. The firm's operating profit rose 31 per cent from Q2 2010 to $239 million.

The company's global vehicle sales were 401,000 units for Q3 2010, a decrease of 1 percent compared to 407,000 units in Q2 2010. In the U.S., Chrysler's market share improved for the fifth consecutive quarter since the company's formation to 9.6 percent in Q3 2010 from 9.4 percent in Q2 2010 and 8.0 percent in Q3 2009.

After the announcement on the Q3 financial results, Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer of Chrysler Group LLC, stated:

"A year ago, Chrysler Group laid out clear and concise five year financial goals and after three consecutive quarters of better than forecasted results, we are not only living up to our commitments but we are also exceeding our 2010 financial objectives."

"Chrysler's financial success is dependent upon the vehicles we design, build and sell. In a mere 16 months, the Company is delivering 16 all-new or refreshed products led by the critically acclaimed all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and including the Fiat 500, signaling the return of the Fiat brand to the U.S. and Canada. We are committed to ensuring that every new vehicle this company launches has the same high quality and technological advances as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Our 2010 accomplishments are just the beginning of building Chrysler Group into a vibrant and competitive auto maker," Marchionne added.

Irmscher Refines the New Opel Astra Sport Tourer

Having already presented several proposals for the five-door hatchback version of the new Opel Astra, Irmscher has now turned its tuning focus on the Sport Tourer variant with the introduction of a styling package.

The German tuning house starts by upgrading the station wagon's looks with the addition of a front spoiler, new upper and lower grilles in a honeycomb design, side skirts and a roof spoiler.

The car's suspension is also dropped by 30mm while the kit is rounded off with larger alloy wheels available in various designs and sizes 18- or 20-inches. More parts are expected to be released at a later date.

Cobra Tries to Roughen Up the Nissan Juke Crossover

It has taken a while for tuners to warm up to the Nissan Juke, but we're slowly starting to see some new aftermarket products for the Japanese firm's odd-looking small crossover. One of the fist tuners to get their hands on the Juke is Germany's Cobra Technology, which created a styling set designed to give the Japanese crossover a more rugged-ish look.

As with other crossover and SUV models, Cobra Technology's first line of order is to fit a stainless-steel front grille guard that is said to meet European pedestrian safety standards. Optionally, buyers can add a pair of LED daytime running lights.

The kit also includes tubular side steps with integrated plastic steps, a sports exhaust system with twin tail pipes and the choice of 19- or 20-inch multispoke alloy wheels.

Project Kahn Tunes into the Audi Q7 for the First Time

Over the years, Project Kahn has presented an array of mods for the likes of the Range Rover Sport and Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, but now the time has come for the UK-based tuner to unveil its first take on the Audi Q7.

Taking inspiration from another in-house project and in particular the Range Rover Sport RS600, the self-proclaimed "king of aesthetic conversions" created a complete body kit for the German SUV, alongside a few interior appointments.

The so-called Kahn Wide Arched Body Kit features extra-wide wheel arch extensions, front vented wings, redesigned bumpers and a discrete, roof-mounted wing, all painted in Pearl Soft White. A set of 22-inch Kahn RS-X alloywheels complete the exterior updates.

Inside, Project Kahn has wrapped the Q7's interior in black quilted leather with red stitching. Other interior goodies include aluminum sport pedals, a Panoramic Glass Roof and a custom speedometer and rev counter.

The entire package costs £12,000 (or £56,875 with the car included), with all of the aforementioned accessories also available as standalone pieces.

Dodge Boss Says Chrysler is considering New Barracuda

Is there room in the U.S. market for an another retro-style muscle car? According to Ralph Gilles, Chrysler's chief designer and boss of the Dodge brand, the answer to that question is yes. At last week's SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas, Gilles told show-goers at the Mopar stand that he is "seriously thinking of how to revive the Plymouth Barracuda."

"There's a lot of pressure on us to bring the 'Cuda back," said Ralph Gilles. Speaking with reporters he added that "the customers have (been) stomping their feet for it."

Being that the Plymouth brand was phased out from the Chrysler Group's portfolio back in 2001, if the 'Cuda were to be revived, it would probably be marketed under the Chrysler brand. And like the original 1970s model, it would be based off the current Dodge Challenger.

This is not the first time that Chrysler Group has toyed around with the idea of bringing back the 'Cuda nameplate, but due to ownership changes and of course, last year's bailout, the company was forced to put all plans on hold.

Over the past years, we've seen a few concept models of the Cuda. At the 2007 edition of the SEMA Show, there was a custom-made build called the "BBP Project 'Cuda". That's the one featured in our photo gallery here.

The 'Cuda concept was handcrafted by Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, which coincidentally, was the same company that manufactured the original Challenger Concept that lead to the current production model.

Though many might think that it isbased on the Challenger, the 'Cuda study is actually built on shortened version of a brand new 2007 Charger SRT8. The design of the car was inspired by its 1970-74 "E" Body ancestors. It was auctioned off by Barret Jackson in 2008 for $159,500. Metalcrafters also created a convertible version of the 'Cuda concept, which you can check out here.

Toyota recalls 2007-11 Tundra for faulty tire pressure monitors

It’s important to make sure your tires are adequately filled, but for some Toyota Tundra owners, that may be a problem. A recall notice has been issued for some 2007-2011 Tundras because they may be afflicted with faulty tire pressure monitoring systems. Approximately 1,629 pickups are affected by this recall, as it is limited to vehicles handled by Southeast Toyota Distributors.

The TPMS were incorrectly calibrated, which means the warning lamp will not light up despite a tire being under-inflated. Owners of potentially affected trucks are being notified, and dealers will recalibrate the systems free of charge.

2012 Toyota Prius V still on track for U.S. launch this fall

False alarm, Prius fans. According to Toyota, the Prius V MPV is on track to hit the market as scheduled. Reports recently began circulating indicating that the Japanese automaker was delaying the vehicle’s launch due to the lingering impact of this year’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. Word was that a battery shortfall was causing the hold-up, though the manufacturer has now confirmed that the large hybrid will debut this fall as originally scheduled.

Unfortunately, the arrival of the Japanese-market Prius Alpha is still slated to experience a delay of indeterminate length. Hit the jump for the brief press release.

Toyota FT-86 coupe to be named Scion FT-S?

We know the Toyota rear-wheel-drive coupe will wear a Scion badge, and now we might finally know what it’s going to be called. The just-make-it-already Toyota FT-86 concept has evolved into the Scion FT-86 and word on the web is that the production version will be known as the Scion FT-S.

Look for the Scion FT-S coupe to make its debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show. Rumor has it that a 2.5-liter engine, not a 2.0-liter, will power the rear wheels and that Toyota plans a heavy marketing push aimed at the drifting crowd.

The Subaru version is slated for a Geneva debut, and the rumormill now suggests that all-wheel drive is planned for the Subaru coupe, which should easily differentiate it from the Scion FT-S and help keep the two cars from cannibalizing each other’s sales. If anyone’s listening, we’ll take an AWD Subaru coupe in full STI trim, please.

Toyota’s unstoppable Land Cruiser turns 60

The year was 1951 and Toyota was hard at work creating a new all-terrain vehicle for military use. After much development, the Toyota BJ was the result of the Japanese automaker’s hard work, and the go-anywhere SUV quickly established itself as a capable workhorse. In fact, it was the first vehicle to be driven to Mt. Fuji’s sixth hill station, a climb rising 2,500 meters. After that feat, the Toyota BJ was applied to police fleets around the country. Sixty years and a name change later, the Toyota Land Cruiser is still running strong around the world.

The Land Cruiser name was applied to the BJ in 1954 and five million of these tough trucks have now been sold around the world. Evolving from the beloved FJ through the 20 Series and on to the 200 Series, the Land Cruiser has gained a level of luxury far removed from its distant BJ ancestor. However, it remains a capable off-road vehicle suited for tackling whatever this planet can throw at it.

Turning 60 is a big deal and Toyota has created two 60th anniversary models of the 2011 Land Cruiser, though these special edition models are currently being built for the UK only. Essentially, the anniversary Land Cruisers are fully-loaded versions of the well-to-do SUV sporting special badging and trim pieces. Follow the jump for Toyota’s official press release.

Toyota recalls 245,000 Lexus sedans in U.S., 1.7 million cars globally

We won’t blame you for reading this headline and thinking, “Oh great, another Toyota recall.” After all, the Japanese automaker dominated headlines in 2010 by recalling every single model in its then-current product portfolio, including the massive sticky pedal and unintended acceleration recalls that took place in the first half of last year.

Now, Toyota has issued a voluntary recall on about 245,000Lexus sedans here in the United States and an additional 1.5 million vehicles around the world. Here in the U.S., the 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350, 2006-2009 Lexus IS 250 and 2006-2008 Lexus IS 350 sedans are being recalled due to faulty installation of fuel pressure sensors. If this sensor has not been fastened tightly enough, fuel has the potential to leak between the gasket that connects it to the fuel delivery pipes. Including these North American vehicles, the fuel sensor recall affects 354,524 vehicles around the world, with Automotive News citing that the Toyota Crown and Mark X sedans are being recalled in the automaker’s home market.

Toyota’s other global recall involves faulty fuel pipes and fuel check valves, though none of the 1.34 million vehicles affected by this one are in North America. In Japan, the RAV4 crossover, Voxy and Noah minivans are being recalled, as well as the Avensis sedan and wagon sold in Europe.

For full details on Toyota’s recall here in the States, follow the jump for the automaker’s official press release.
