Renault May Replace Laguna with a Crossover Model

French carmaker Renault may lift a page from its Nissan partner when the time comes to replace its Laguna series, which has not been able to establish itself in the European mid-size segment against the likes of the Volkswagen Passat and Opel Insignia.

Because of its poor sales figures, Renault recently took the difficult decision to drop the Laguna sedan and coupe (among other models) from the UK market this February.

Nissan was facing a similar problem with its most of its conventional offerings like the B-Segment Micra and the C-Segment Almera across the pond and elsewhere. The Japanese automaker then decided to introduce two very different models to compete in the popular categories, the Juke and the Qashqai crossovers, both of which proved to be a success.

Speaking with Autocar magazine, Renault UK boss Thierry Sybord, said that he favors a similar solution for the Laguna's replacement that will arrive in 2015.

"If the next-generation Laguna is the same as the current one, then there’s no way it will be a success in the UK," Sybord told the magazine. “My view is that, in Europe, there is not enough opportunity to sell this kind of saloon. There are the two German actors in Europe, and the two big fleet operators in the UK, Ford and Vauxhall. We can’t compete."

Sybord noted that Renault will take a decision on the Laguna's replacement within the next three months, and that a crossover had been suggested to overcome the sales problem.

“Therefore we are still thinking of a new kind of car, possibly a crossover saloon,” he said. “Look at what the Qashqai has done for that market, it is a success. It would be a new kind of car for the market, but it would be very hard to do. The decision is whether we want to carry on with what we’ve done before; if we build the same car again, the situation will stay the same.”

Renault Rejuvenates Megane for 2012 with Subtle Styling and Engine Updates

In the past two months, Renault has launched a budget supermini for the Indian market, added special editions to the line-up of the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet and the Koleos SUV, and revamped the Scenic/Grand Scenic mid-size MPVs and Laguna Coupe.

Therefore, leaving the Megane as it is would be rather strange, that’s why La Regie unveiled today the “Megane Collection 2012” or simply put, the facelifted version of its C-segment model.

LED daytime running lights are the new black for automotive designers and the 2012 Megane sports a new set on the its revised front bumper that gets gloss black and chrome details. There's also a new selection of wheels and two fresh color options named “Majorelle Blue” and “Pearlescent White”.

The cabin features new trim along with an optional two-tone leather-Alcantara combination in three finishes and the (formerly limited) Bose edition is now an equipment level.

Meanwhile the GT and GT-Line versions receive “boomerang” LED lights, red upholstery stitching, a sports steering wheel, a dashboard trim strip and Renault-Sport-badged doorsill guards.

So far, all the changes are very subtle. However, it’s under the skin that the Megane has really changed with the addition of Renault’s first ever gasoline engine series to feature both turbocharging and direct injection technologies.

The 1.2-liter TCe 115 Energy replaces the previous model’s 1.6-liter naturally aspirated unit. It provides both more power (+5HP) and torque (+40Nm), for a total of 115HP and 190Nm (140 lb-ft) respectively. At the same time it sports a 25 percent lower average fuel consumption, at just 5.3 lt/100 km (44.4 mpg US), which gives it a range in excess of 1,000 km (620 miles), while its CO2 emissions are 119 g/km.

The 2012 Megane will also be available with the new Energy dCi 100 diesel, an updated version of the existing 1.5-liter unit that incorporates technology from the 1.6-liter dCi 130. The new engine has a fuel consumption of less than 3.8 lt/100 km (61.9 mpg US) and emits only 95 g/km of CO2 despite maximum torque been increased by 20Nm (14.7 lb-ft).

The range-topping Renault Sport model in the Trophy limited edition trim gains an additional 15HP and 20Nm (14.7 lb-ft) when the driver selects the Sport mode in the Dynamic Management system, thus having at his disposal a maximum output of 265HP and 360Nm (265.5 lb-ft) of torque.

It has also gained what Renault describes as an “F1-style” front blade with two rows of six LEDs and black headlight surrounds for a sportier look. The newly-designed 18-inch alloys are available in satin or matt black finish and the interior has red stitching on the steering wheel, gear lever knob and dashboard.

Renault said the Mégane Collection 2012 would go on sale from March in Europe, then in the course of the year in other markets around the globe including Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Russia and Argentina.

New Year Brings Bose Treatment for Refreshed Renault Koleos Crossover

With the first Bose Edition accounting for close to 30 percent of the pre-facelift Koleos' sales across Europe, it's only reasonable for Renault to carry over the limited edition to the refreshed version of its compact crossover.

The highlight of the 2012 Koles Bose Edition Phase 2 is of course the audio system from Bose that has been tailor made for the Renault model.

According to the French automaker, the number, type and position of the loudspeakers were "carefully selected" by Bose engineers who also tuned the digital processors and signal equalizers in order to produce a high-quality sound for all occupants.

Audio system aside, the Koleos Bose Edition also features specific exterior styling and interior appointments including aluminium-coloured door mirror housings, extra-tinted rear glass, colored 17-inch alloy wheels, Black Lacquer interior trim details, plus mixed black fabric upholstery.

The Bose edition is offered exclusively with Renault's 2.0-liter dCi 150 diesel engine that can be matched to one of three types of transmission: six-speed manual with front-wheel drive, six-speed manual with all-wheel drive or six-speed automatic with 4x4.

In France, prices for the new Koleos Bose Edition start from €29,400 (about US$38,100).

Renault Decimates UK Line-Up Due to Poor Sales, Cuts Laguna, Wind, Espace and More

Something is rotten in the state of Renault: its sales in the UK market. The fall of the pound against the Euro by 16 percent since the end of 2008, which minimized profitability of companies based in euro-denominated countries along with a staggering 29 percent drop in Renault's sales in the first 11 months of the year, forced the French carmaker to make some hard decisions.

Renault spokesperson Caroline De Gezelle announced today that, from February, the company will stop taking orders for no less than five of its models that are currently sold in Europe’s third largest car market.

The models that will be axed in Britain are the Laguna sedan and coupe, both versions of the Espace and Modus MPVs, the Kangoo and Traffic passenger vans, and the recently launched Twingo-based Wind roadster.

According to Reuters, De Gezelle said, “the decision is the result of the economic crisis. The pound’s weakness against the euro is part of the difficulty we’re facing in the UK.”

The Renault spokeswoman added that company will close almost one-third of its 190 dealerships in the UK, among them some of the biggest metropolitan showrooms that are owned by the French carmaker itself.

Carlos Tavares, the Nissan-Renault Alliance new Chief Operating Officer, has ordered a complete review of the French carmaker’s operations. As it turns out, its UK division has been loss making for quite a while.

As a result, in a couple of months, British buyers that will walk into a Renault dealership will be able to choose only between four models: the Twingo, the Clio, the Megane and the Scenic. Not a pretty picture, is it?

Renault admits that its performance has been poor, but prefers to see its bold move as a way of cleaning up the house for its 2012 offensive.

According to Autocar magazine, he company will start by improving its aftersales package, including four-years/100k mile warranty, four-years/48k mile servicing and four-years roadside assistance.

The second step is the introduction of its range of brand new electric cars: the Fluence EV sedan, the Zoe supermini and the funky Twizy city car.

The third, and probably most crucial, is the launch of the 2012 Clio. It wouldn’t be far from the truth to say that the company’s success is twined with that of its new B-segment contender. Its predecessor fared very poorly this year, selling 21,000 units, 10,000 less than in 2010.

Carlos Ghosn, current CEO of the Renault Nissan Alliance, has managed to turn around the once-ailing Nissan. When he took the reins of the number two Japanese carmaker he started by slashing costs and platforms and introducing halo models like the GT-R R35 and the Leaf EV, and in doing so has become something of a hero in Japan.

Will the French, too, be applauding him in a few years’ time, for saving their country's second biggest carmaker? Only time will tell.
