BMW Group Publishes Results of first Mini E Trial Project

We all know about the merits of electric vehicles but have you ever wondered how it would really be like owning one and driving it on a daily basis?

In collaboration with the British government, the BMW Group launched a trial program in the UK with 40 pure-electric MINI E cars given to 62 citizens and 72 pool users over two six-month periods, from December 2009 until March 2011.

Now that the trial period is over, MINI and the Oxford Brookes University, which undertook the research, have released their findings.

Here are the MINI E trial project results in numbers:

  • 40 MINI Es

  • 12 Months

  • 138 Drivers (32 women, 106 men)

  • 258,105 miles (415,380 km)

  • 33,345 Journeys

  • 80,282 kWh Electricity

  • Highest mileage by an individual driver over six months: 7,954 miles (11,270 km)

  • Average mileage per vehicle over six months, including fleet pool cars: 3,226 miless (4,830 km)

  • Average single trip distance: 9.5 miles (15.3 km), compared to UK average of 7 miles (11.3 km)

  • Average cost to charge over six months: £60, less than 2p per mile

  • Virtually all recharging carried out at home.

  • Almost all participants said they’d consider buying an electric car as a result of taking part in the program.

  • 80% of the participants trips were made exclusively in the MINI E. With the addition of rear seats and a bigger boot, this number would increase to 90%.

The MINI E is powered an electric motor that produces 204HP and 204 Nm, while drawing energy from a 35kWh Li-Ion battery. It has a top speed of 95 mph (153 km/h) and an official maximum range of 149 miles (240 km), although the company admits that 112 miles (180 km) is a more realistic figure.

Nearly 300,000 Chrysler and Dodge Minivans Recalled Over Airbag Issue

The Chrysler Group has issued a recall on 299,718 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans from the 2008 model year to fix a problem that could cause the airbags to deploy unexpectedly.

The automaker said that the issue is related to the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) modules that controls the airbags. According to Chrysler, the OCR module may have been exposed to moisture. If this happens, it could lead to the airbag warning light going on while in some cases, the airbag could deploy for no reason.

Chrysler had previously recalled the same batch of vehicles in January of 2011 to replace the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) drain grommet, which had the potential to leak moisture into the area of the ORC module.

The company said that its engineers determined that "that the printed circuit board in ORC modules previously exposed to moisture could delaminate over time, despite the elimination of the source of prior moisture".

The Detroit automaker added that it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the condition in vehicles that have had the prior recall completed.

“Despite the lack of field reports, we believe it is in the best interest of our customers to replace these modules to ensure the proper functionality of the minivan’s advanced safety system,” said David Dillon, Head of Product Investigations and Campaigns.

The majority of the affected minivans were sold in the United States, but Chrysler said there are also 50,251 vehicles in Canada; 3,748 vehicles in Mexico, and 13,633 export models.

The company will begin sending letters to the owners of the affected models in September to schedule an appointment with dealers to replace the OCR modules free-of-charge.

Ford Announces 45% Increase in Sales in India

Ford's India subdivision announced today that it sold 71,347 units from January 1 until July 31, which corresponds to a 45% increase compared to the same period of 2010 when it delivered 49,131 units.

The Detroit firm wants to further increase its presence in the country and has announced the signing of an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the State of Gujarat to invest approximately $1 billion to build two new plants in addition to the one in Chennai, for vehicle and engine manufacturing on a 460-acre site in Sanand.

“These are exciting times for Ford in India,” said Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India. “We are investing in the future and reinforcing our long-term commitment to India by building two new plants in Gujarat and by adding the new Fiesta to our portfolio. The new Fiesta is the first of eight new vehicles we will bring to India by mid-decade”.

Ford India was established in 1995 and is owned by Ford Motor Company. Until now it operates one factory in Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai, which produces the Figo, the Fiesta Classic, the Endeavour and the new Fiesta which was launched in April this year.

Scagliarini Motorsports Creates One-off 4x4 504 Coupe Zagato Elaborata

American-based design house Scagliarini Motorsports has unveiled its latest creation, the 504 Coupe Zagato Elaborata, or 504cze. As the name implies, the car is inspired by Zagato’s 500 Coupe concept that was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Painted in a bright Lamborghini Arancio hue –that’s orange to you and me- the 504 Coupe Zagato Elaborata is based on the Abarth 500 esseesse with power coming from a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-pot delivering 180HP and 300 Nm of torque.

But unlike the front-wheel drive only Abarth, the 504cze features an all-wheel drive system (hence the “4” in its name).

Other special features include a set of Brembo brakes, a performance exhaust system by Ragazzon, painted rear windows and Abarth front seats trimmed in alcantara.

As we speak, the 504cze is a one-off special due to be delivered to a client in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, Scagliarini Motorsports said it is willing to manufacture a limited production run if there is substantial interest from buyers.

Oops: Hundreds of Irish National Lottery Winners Wrongly Informed They’d Won a Jaguar XK

If you were lucky enough to win something in last Wednesday’s €4.4 million (US$7.3 million) draw of the Irish National Lottery and checked your numbers online, you were in for an additional surprise: that you’d also won a €150,000 (US$246,450) Jaguar XK convertible.

Unfortunately for the hundreds of €2 and €2,000 (US$3.29 and US$3,286) lottery winners, there was only one car to be won and it’s already been claimed.

The National Lottery has apologised to those affected by the announcement, which was caused by a glitch on the organisation’s website.

A spokeswoman explained that, “a couple of hundred,” persons were affected, though the actual numbers are not known.

Furthermore, the glitch only affected those who checked their numbers online and the National Lottery became aware of the issue as early as the morning after.

At least those affected still have their lottery win, even if it’s not a Jaguar XK convertible.

McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Completes its First 24-Hour Endurance Test

McLaren claims it is satisfied with the performance of its new MP4-12C GT3 racer, which entered a 24-hour race for the first time last weekend at Spa-Francorchamps. And this despite the fact that from the three cars entered, two factory models retired early and only one run by customer team VonRyan Racing, managed to cross the finishing line.

Car number 59, with project manager Andrew Kirkaldy behind the wheel, came into contact early in the race with another car and as a result hit the wall at Turn 1. Kirkaldy was cleared from the hospital without any injuries.

The impact was significant. If anything positive can be drawn, it’s that we are delighted to be using the 12C road car’s carbon ‘MonoCell’ chassis in our race car," said Kirkaldy. "It proved here that it is an incredibly robust safety cell for the driver. Just a few hours after the incident, I was back at the circuit with the team.”

The team retired car number 58 voluntarily after what was described as a “thermal incident”. Tim Mullen, who was driving at the time, said that there was a small fire but it was unrelated to any major mechanical failure. The cause of the incident will be investigated by McLaren after the car is returned to the UK.

Finally, car number 60 finished its endurance debut, achieving a very impressive time of 2:23.214 with Adam Christodoulou driving on lap 256.

Chris Goodwin, McLaren GT executive and Chief Test Driver, commented: “The performance of the 12C GT3 and its drivers in car 60 was pleasing. Feedback from the team’s engineers and drivers indicates that the 12C GT3 is meeting its reliability and driveability targets”.

The next step in the MP4-12C GT3's development phase will be at the Blancpain Endurance Series races at Magny-Cours and Silverstone later this year.
