U.S. Auto Industry Speeds Up as China and Europe Slow Down

What difference only three years can make: in 2009, U.S. sales had dipped to their lowest point in the last 25 years, while sales in China were increasing exponentially.

Today, the picture is quite different. The U.S. auto market has recovered and according to a report from Autonews, it may be the safest bet for profitable growth. Emerging markets including China, India and Brazil, which until recently looked like the land of opportunity for carmakers, are slowing down.

“The U.S. is now the high-growth market in the world as much as India or China”, said senior partner for Boston Consulting Group, and adviser to the 2009 government bailout of GM and Chrysler, Xavier Mosquet. “The worst thing five years ago was to be a U.S. automaker or supplier. Now it’s the best thing to be.”

U.S. light-vehicle sales increased by 10 percent or 1.19 million to 12.8 million compared to 2010. It was also a substantial increase from 2009’s 10.4 million sales.

On the contrary, China’s new car deliveries increased by 3-5 percent in 2011, the lowest number in the last 12 years according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, which will release annual data this week.

This is probably the first time since 1998 that U.S. sales rose faster than in China and quite a turnaround from the 2009 bankruptcy of GM, Chrysler and many of their suppliers.

What’s more, 10 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg forecast that in 2012, the U.S. market will rise again, by nearly 5.6 percent. Detroit's Big 3 are rolling out one new model after another, while many foreign automakers are increasing their North American plants’ production further reinforcing the U.S. economy.

Some analysts, like Mike Jackson, CEO of America’s largest retailer of new cars and trucks AutoNation Inc., are even more optimistic about the next couple of years: “The vehicles in America are old and wearing out. We are going to take another step in the recovery this year and we’re on a journey back to 15.5 million to 16 million units as soon as 2013”, he said.

New Chrysler 200 Super S by Mopar Heads to the Detroit Auto Show

Joining the 2012 Dodge Charger Redline at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week will be a second Mopar creation, this time based on the Chrysler 200 sedan called the Super S.

There are two available kits that improve the Chrysler 200 sedan's looks and handling respectively and which can be ordered together.

"The Super S is Mopar's interpretation of the Chrysler 200," said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar. "The extensive list of high-quality Mopar parts enhances the performance and appearance of our Chrysler 200."

For Stage One, Mopar's team developed an appearance package that includes a large chin spoiler, satin chrome fog light trim, grille surround and mesh in the upper and lower grilles, new side sills, satin chrome belt moldings, black chrome "200" badges and gray or hyper black 18-inch "S" alloy wheels.

A new trunk lid spoiler along with a satin chrome light bar and a matte black lower diffuser with attached exhaust openings complete the more aggressive look.

While there aren't any upgrades for the engine, Stage Two adds a coil-over suspension that also lowers the ride height, along with a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust system.

The Super S packages will be available for order in the U.S. this spring.

Yay or Nay? Custom Chrysler 300C HEMI V8 Coupe

When you are a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer like Tony Gwynn, you can pretty much afford to get whatever ride you like. In Gwynn's case, at some point he fancied a first-generation Chrysler 300 in a coupe form. And he got his wish.

But now, Gwynn's custom-made Chrysler 300 has popped up for sale at Beverly Hills Motor Cars in San Diego with the dealer asking for US$27,950 (€21,700).

The 2005 Chrysler is powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 matched to an automatic transmission and has only been driven for 7,000 miles (11,263 kilometers).

Aside from transforming the four-door saloon into a coupe, the customizer also chopped the roof and added large Asanti wheels and decorative chrome trim on the outside.

We could be wrong, but judging by the design and the controls for the front seats, they seem to have been lifted off an older BMW, possibly a 3 Series.

Check out the rest of the pictures in our gallery below and have your say in the comments area.

GM Touts Recovery of Stolen Chrysler 300 Thanks to its OnStar FMV

Detroit's "Big Three" never miss the chance to take a dig at each other when the opportunity arises. And for General Motors, the opportunity came with the recovery of a stolen 2006 Chrysler 300 that was equipped with the firm's OnStar FMV [For My Vehicle] in-car wireless communication system.

This is the first recorded case of a non-GM vehicle fitted with the aftermarket mirror, which encompasses the OnStar system, that was stolen and recovered by the police since the company introduced it into the market earlier this spring.

"OnStar advisors typically assist in the recovery of more than 500 stolen General Motors’ vehicles each month, but helping to recover a competitor's stolen vehicle is a new undertaking," GM said in a statement.

The company says that the owner of the recovered Chrysler, Jean Franklin of Gresham, Oregon, bought the system and fitted it on her car on December 16. Just two days later, on Sunday, December 18, Franklin called OnStar to report that her vehicle had been stolen.

According to GM, OnStar then provided the Gresham Police Department with the vehicle’s location and officers were able to pull over the car and apprehend the suspect within 64 minutes of the original call.

“The stolen vehicle feature is the reason I purchased [OnStar FMV],” said Franklin. “My car had been stolen before, so the police recommended I get it. I am much more comfortable now that the car has OnStar.”

GM says that OnStar Advisors have offered Stolen Vehicle Assistance services more than 58,000 times in the company’s history.

“Maserati will improve its amounts by having three cars”, said Marchionne after the CBI discussion in Ones the other day. According to Indian distribution Car Paper, Marchionne said that these would be the Kubang SUV, the Quattroporte replacing and a scaled-down sized four-door sedanthat will participate in the E-segment against companies the Jaguar XF and BMW 5-Series.

The Fiat manager also verified that “the contributor structure [for the scaled-down sized sedan] is the Chrysler 300, but the revocation is absolutely different and the machines are absolutely Ferrari/Maserati.”

He also said that Maserati would continue to be, for the greatest piece, an Italian language carmaker: “Apart from the Kubang, the big bars will remain in Italia. There is a website in Modena that creates the Quattroporte. There can be some concern to what happens to that place after the Quattroporte. There is plenty of common function in what we’re doing between the scaled-down sized car and the larger one that we can do what we want.”

Last, but not least, he resolved the concern of VW being considering the getting Alfa Romeo: “Alfa in VW’s palms would not be Alfa” he said, professing that the In german group’s program technique would change the changeable personality. Besides, he included, Alfa is currently not up on the market now.

However, Marchionne did not procedure out this going on later on if someone created Fiat an provide it could not refuse…
